As if you weren’t worried enough with the economy in its current state, now you have to stress about whether or not your home will be broken into because of the inevitable rise in crime. As the economy weakens crime will continue to get worse. Areas with a large amount of properties facing foreclosure face the largest threat. What can you do to protect your home and valuables? As you will see in the next few paragraphs there are actually sevearal ways that surprisingly are not common knowledge. When implemetned, these tips can potentially make your home one of the most secure in the neighborhood.
MAILBOX- Take your name off of it! A criminal can call 411 and get your phone number, call it and listen for your phone to ring. This is an easy way for thieves to know that you are not home. Don’t let this happen to you!
TELEPHONE- Turn down the ringer so that a potential burglar will not know if you are home or not.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING- Having motion triggered lighting keeps potential criminals out of the dark. Nothing dissuades the attempts of an intruder like a spot light showcasing their every move. Be sure and purchase outdoor motion lighting with built in adjustment settings enabling you to adjust the sensitivity. You wouldn’t want a stray cat setting off your outdoor lighting now would you?
GLASS DOORS- Thinking of buying a glass door? Forget about it! Glass doors are easy to break and if the door lock is close in proximity to a glass pane then even the most inexperienced criminals will be able to make their way in. If you can’t find the inner strength to exchange your lovely glass laden doors with wood or metal then consider laminating them. 3M’S 28-ply Ultra Safety and Security Clear window film should do the trick.
TOOLS- Lock up the ladder and other potentially useful tools to ensure that a burglar doesn’t use them to enter your home.
SHRUBBERY- Keep them low. Overgrown bushes and trees provide excellent cover for a thief to hide behind. TRASH- Yep. That’s right! The trash can be a prime target for someone who is looking for signs of valuables within your home. Tear up the boxes and put them into bags at the bottom of your trash can. One of the worst things you can do is to “advertise” your possessions to criminals by leaving the boxes of expensive items on the side of your garbage can in plain view. LIGHTING- Put your lights on a timer. Doing so is a great way to make your home look occupied and will likely cost less than you think
DOOR LOCKS - Make sure to have a dead bolt lock with a strike plate secured by at least 3 inch long screws. Anything short of this will only be mediocre at best.
WINDOWS and TRACKS- Go to your local hardware store and have them cut medal piping that will fit into the tracks of your windows. All you will have to do is measure the length of the window track and then have the piping cut around ¼” less than the length measured. By cutting the piping ¼” inch or so shorter than the length of the window track you will ensure the prevention any return trips. A little short is ok but too snug to fit in and out easily is an unnecessary nuisance. Nothing will be more frustrating to a wannabe intruder than a window that cannot be opened.
All of these tips will be easy and inexpensive to implement. The value and safety they provide will be worth the time and expense. In addition to taking these precautions, you can greatly reduce the probabilty of having your home broken into by installing a top- of- the- line home security system.
